CONSPIRACY: GAME OF THRONES
A custom MTG set by Niko(las) Masin
This Set was designed for everybody who loves epic multiplayer matches like Commander and/or the Conspiracy Drafts. (Recommended number of players: 4-8)
Overall Game of Thrones: Conspiracy was designed primarely for limited, though it mostly follows the guidelines and conventions of modern official sets. It's a large set with currently 269 cards total (99 commons, 77 uncommons, 69 rares, 19 mythic rares and 5 basic lands).
While HBO's 'Game of Thrones' is basically predestined for a MTG Conspiracy Set (dangerous Intrigues and power plays, huge battles, magnificent fantasy elements, etc), it also features a gigantic (legendary ;)) character cast. So why not have both? In 'Conspiracy: Game of Thrones' you draft your own Commander to support you on your rightful claim to The Iron Throne!
COMMANDER DRAFT:
How does this work in detail? You draft this set as any other, but occasionally pick up a legendary creature (every creature from uncommon upwards is legendary, so no worries!) and in the end you choose one of them to be the leader of your army (=Commander)! Due to the limited environment, most commander rules DON'T apply, which mainly means:
• your deck doesn't need to be built within the color identity of your commander
• you may play multiple copies of the same card in your deck
• commander damage as a way to win the game doesn't exist
• players start at 20 life
• you'll draft a 40 cards deck in ADDITION to your commander
BUT commander tax is still paid as usual!
MECHANICS:
The Iron Throne
'The Iron Throne' – Instead of becoming the "Monarch", you 'occupy The Iron Throne'. The first player wanting to occupy The Iron Throne (before that it doesn't exist), needs a card that straight up gives it to him.
It reads as follows: "At the beginning of your end step, create a 1/2 white and black Kingsguard creature token. Whenever a commander enters the battlefield under an opponents control, if you don’t control yours, they occupy The Iron Throne."
Other main mechanics
• Council’s dilemma – When [...], each player votes for approval or denial. Do X for each approval vote and do Y for each denial vote.
• Savage X (Whenever a creature with savage X attacks, choose a creature with the most power among creatures defending player controls and put X -1/-1 counters on it.)
• 'Imprison' target creature. (Exile that creature until a creature deals combat damage to you.) (There are tokens for this mechanic, where you can lay up the creatures you imprisoned.)
• Conspiracies → (Start the game with conspiracies in the command zone.) → Like in other Conspiracy sets, they have some free, small effects nobody can interact with directly.
Small additions and new „evergreens“
• Horsemanship (This creature can’t be blocked except by creatures with horsemanship.) → Since in classic medieval culture there aren't that many demons and angels hanging around, horsemanship basically replaces „flying“ in this Set
• Lieutenant – As long as you control your commander, […] → one Common-Cycle in the Set
• Honor (This creature can block an additional creature each combat.)
• Brick counters on ten uncommon Artifact castles
• Gold artifact tokens with “Sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.” → 'The Iron Throne' mechanic already indroduced it. It's the revival of the 'Theros'-block tokens or, if you want, basically the same as the recently introduced 'Treasure'-tokens.
ARCHETYPES
Due to the giant number of commanders and wide range of mechanics/abilities, the limited archetypes are intentionally open and basically endless - therefore every draft should look very different! Nonetheless, like in 'Conspiracy: Take the Crown', there are some loose, fundamental archetype-constructs you could seek for:
Last, but not least
Please be aware that, while i watched the show like a thousand times and read a ton of content online, i didn't read all the books yet and may not be the biggest GoT/Asoiaf-Nerd who has ever lived - but i certainly tried to get the flavor right. Feedback on that end is very welcome, but please go easy on me on that regard - Thx! (Also, i know that 'White Walkers' aren't Zombies and Daenerys isn't a Planeswalker, but i guess you know why i did it anyway ;) ) I would also be more than happy to hear your feedback on the overall gameplay and power balancing! While i already testdrafted the set a ton, there may still be some changes to be made Also, if there's something important to add to the description for clarifying the mechanics etc., please let me know.
Thanks for looking at my set - Have fun with it!
