While ideally applicable to any format, Core EM is designed for the Extended Multiverse Custom Standard format, as the first set released in that format. Its cards and archetypes are meant to broadly represent the official MTG story leading up to where the EM stops following cannon MTG lore, namely looking at Magic Origins, Battle for Zendikar block, Shadows Over Innistrad block, Kaladesh block, and Amonkhet block.
Details

Archetype Showcase
As with most sets nowadays, Core EM uses the ten two-color guild pairings as the basis for its Archetypes.
Colors | Archetype | Description |
---|---|---|
Artifacts | Assemble artifact synergies to generate additional value and take over the game. Signpost Uncommon: Aerial Engineer | |
Zombies | Amass an army of the undead and overwhelm the opponent. Signpost Uncommon: Unraveling Mummy | |
Aggro | With some slight human tribal subthemes, utilize efficient, aggressive creatures to kill the opponent before they can get their footing. Signpost Uncommon: Honored Crop-Captain | |
Humans | Assemble your band of survivors to stand up against the horrors of your opponent. Signpost Uncommon: Thraben Captain | |
Zombies | A more controlling variant of the Zombie archetype that likes to play well with sacrifice effects. Signpost Uncommon: Diregraf Captain | |
Artifacts | Ensure you are playing and have in play a large number of artifacts together. Signpost Uncommon: Reclusive Artificer | |
Ramp | Get a lot of lands and mana dorks into play so you can play big late game spells. Signpost uncommon: Weaver of Currents | |
Sacrifice | Summon a large number of token creatures and sacrifice to get high-value effects without significantly diminishing your board state. Signpost Uncommon: Bloodflow Berserker | |
Sacrifice | Use effects and creatures that care about creatures dying to mitigate the downside of sacrificing your creatures. Signpost Uncommon: Null Procession | |
Landfall | Turn your land drops into extra value for your cards and use specific cards to make multiple landfall effects happen each turn. Signpost Uncommon: Force of the Roil |
